10 May 2018

A couple of months ago an old Brentonian sent OMNI a letter telling them about his interest in the club. Since then, he has bought flags for the club and supported us financially. He was interested in learning more about the club and promised that one day he would come and visit.   OMNI stands for open minded non-discriminatory individuals, and is for people who are interested in supporting the LGBT+ community and who are part of the community and recently we had Peter Litherland, Privett '87 join OMNI on Tuesday, May 8th.  Peter is an old Brentonian who had taken an interest in OMNI. The discussion started off with our OMNI Captain, Sarah L, Allard ‘18 introducing Mr. Litherland and explaining why he had come for a visit. Peter then went on to talk about his life at Brentwood before being out was socially acceptable. He explained that life was tough before the 2000s: it was not easy being part of the LGBT+ community. He had left Brentwood unsure of his sexualitly, and it was not until later that he truly accepted himself. He explained that after his life at Brentwood he went on to become a pilot, and for a long time believed that he was the only gay pilot out there. In the late 90s, he then discovered Canadian Aviation Pride. He has since been a member and participated in many Pride festivals and events. He helped raise awareness to LGBT+  pilots in North America and around the world.  The students munched away at the cookies and chips as Mr. Litherland and Mr. Felix went on to talk about people who had been part of the Brentwood community coming out. After that discussion, Peter took questions from students who seemed to be filled with excitement. Arianna A, Mackenzie ‘19, asked if Brentwood would ever consider putting the Captain of OMNI on the SEC. This created a discussion amongst the students, teachers, and our guest. Mr Felix suggested that it could be done in the near future and Sarah talked about how she had already spoken to other teachers about it. She said that there were teachers who supported the idea and that they wanted to put it into motion. The time slowly came to an end as the clock struck 19:10. Everyone thanked Mr. Litherland for his time and his gifts, and headed back to their dorms. OMNI was glad to see that an old Brentinians took interest in the club and we hope that there will be more support for the club in the future.  Ash M, Mackenzie ‘20
