Preparations for the Cap Toss

Graduating is an exciting yet daunting experience. It is a milestone moment that marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Julia P, Alex ‘23 speaks for our class when she says, “I can’t wait for graduation but it’s approaching way too fast.”

With cap and gown fittings, grad photos, and deciding on a final grad quote, this time of year is a flurry of chaos for our Grads. On top of all the preparations, final decision deadlines for universities are also fast approaching. Though this may be an easy decision for some, in these upcoming weeks you will likely see many Grads staring off into the oceanfront view repeatedly editing pros and cons lists. You will also likely find “universities with the best nightlife” as a common search in their web browser history. Deborah Z, Alex ‘23 says, “I’m jealous of the people that have a one-word answer to the question ‘Where are you going next year?’ because mine is a 5-minute rant.”

Senioritis also tends to infect the minds of Grads around this time of year. Finding the motivation to continue working, stay organized with all our responsibilities, and enjoy our last few months with friends gets pretty draining so please, take it easy on us. Despite how our Head of School, Mr Patel, likes to so graciously remind us how many brunches we have left in the year --it’s five by the way--, this year graduates are constantly torn between wanting to exit the Brentwood gates but fearing they will miss the time they took for granted.

Whether it be continuing to post-secondary education, entering the workforce, or travelling through a gap year, when we toss our caps at the end of the year, we mark the end of adolescence and the beginning of the rest of our lives. Ms Cheung, Mackenzie Houseparent, always describes graduation as a “bittersweet” event; “Of course, I’m sad to see our grads leave us, but I can’t wait to see what they accomplish in their futures.”
