Prep is for Bonding

Approximately once a month, at 8:30pm during prep, laptops are shut down, binders are closed and final emails are sent. As the house starts to stir with people running around—often wrapped in blankets—there are shouts of food-induced glee. Homework is forgotten, cast aside for the next hour and in its place: Big/Little’s Night. Students are placed in small groups of about 7 or 8 within the house, with at least one person of each grade. A meeting place is set for each group and food is supplied by everyone. I find that these evenings of laughter and bonding are truly necessary in the sometimes overwhelming Brentwood environment.  Not only do you get to know the people in your house better, but you get a bit of time put aside specifically for relaxation. The topic of conversation depends on the people, but it’s always laid-back and casual. Stories are swapped, advice is given, and new friendships are formed. These nights are especially fantastic for bonding with different grades. Every year it’s so cool to see and be part of the particularly strong bonds between the junior and senior grades. Students become so close and it’s clear to see a loving sibling-like relationship form. Friendships formed in the houses at Brentwood are some of the closest ones I’ve ever seen in a school setting. Living all together really seems to enhance students’ people skills and ability to bond and form meaningful relationships that will last a long time. Big/Little’s night is one of the special activities that make Brentwood such a unique and family-like atmosphere, it’s truly delightful to be a part of. Jaclyn C, Alex ‘16
