Thanks to the Brentwood Health program, a group of 10th graders recently took a trip to the Cowichan District Hospital to take part in a program called PARTY (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth).

First, we heard from a doctor about how being impaired while driving can affect you, showing us pictures of some crashes throughout the presentation. Then the group got split into four smaller groups with the students each heading off to different stations.

One station was a trauma nurse showing the groups her tools and how she uses them in an emergency: it highlighted that you don’t want to end up being treated by her. Another station was a police officer explaining what happens to national and international students when they are caught driving impaired. There were other stations which included a hospital staffer explaining how it is to be physically or psychologically disabled.

All the groups met together at the end and a car crash victim named Sandy, who is now suffering from permanent brain damage, talked about his past, including his crash, and his life before and after it.

Kenton L, Rogers ‘20, stated: “It was an experience which opened my mind.”

Be safe.
