Party On, Pink Day

13 October 2014

A plethora of pink and pretty Brentwood students happily went to classes on Friday, October 3rd to celebrate Pink Day. Students were seen wearing scarves, onesies, a variety of pink shirts and skirts, and a myriad of sweaters with pink logos. On every pink-toting student was a small pink ribbon to remember and honour those who have fought, won, or lost a battle to breast cancer. Like the red poppies during Remembrance Day, the pink ribbons signify that we are aware of breast cancer and remember everyone who has fought with it. Perhaps unlike the red poppies, the ribbons are also a symbol of hope and a little reminder to put donations (even if it's only a dollar or two) towards the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. This year, Brentonians managed to raise over $12,000 for breast cancer, an incredible feat. That money will join the 25 million dollars donated across Canada and will go towards research, education, and advocacy programs. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's website estimates that over 24,000 women and 200 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Of those people, 5,000 women and 60 men will lose the battle. The little pink ribbon we wear is a reminder that we can help to create a future without breast cancer, where people don't have to fight it on a daily basis. Even if we're doing something as simple as donating a toonie and pinning a tiny ribbon on our chests, we're helping. Keep your onesies and scarves on hand and let's see if we can beat $12,000 next year. Sarah P, Mackenzie ‘15
