Parenting from the Lower Mainland

1 November 2012
A group of our current parents will be blogging intermittently to help prospective families discover more about Brentwood by sharing personal stories, insights and advice.  At Brentwood, students choose to be here; this blog, written from a parent's perspective, is designed to help families better understand the transition. If you would like to send us your own blogs and stories, please email karen.reburn@brentwood.bc.ca Parenting from the Lower Mainland We decided to try taking the seaplane from Vancouver to catch the volleyball tournament our daughter was playing in one recent weekend at Brentwood College.  When we woke up that morning the rain was coming down hard and the sky was grey.  I was having second thoughts about flying; however the ferry takes too long to make attending the tournament worthwhile.   Fifteen minutes before take off the sky cleared and the sun was brilliant.  What a flight !  We skimmed the glittering ocean from Vancouver Harbour to Nanaimo Harbor. We rented a car, picked up a coffee, made our way down the highway to the school and were able to watch most of the tournament.  We were greeted with such enthusiasm.  I think she misses us. We miss her enormously.  I never thought she would leave home before university, but when she found Brentwood there was no stopping her.  She found the school that speaks to her, that provides the philosophy she thrives in.  I could not consciously hold her back.
The Volleyball Team is one part of her life at Brentwood.  As a parent, I am impressed with their love for the game, their respect for their coach and their support for each other.  They each had a word written in bold letters on their arms shouting out their individual strength.  Each word was different and together they were a strong and complete team.   As a parent, I know that every team that came out for the tournament are equally talented.  They have all put in their time on the court.  Each wants to play volleyball.  Any one of the teams could have won; it depends on a lot of factors in any given moment.  What stands out with Brentwood’s Grade 9-10 A Team, is their love and support for each other and their coach.  They watch out for each other and they try and please their coach so he knows they were paying attention to his suggestions.  It brought a warm feeling to my heart when other students dropped by to show their support, and many did throughout the two days. The games were, on the edge of your seat, great volleyball.  Thank you for being the place my daughter wants to be.
