Students of Outdoor Pursuits completed their annual immersion day recently near Skutz Falls on the Cowichan River. This unusual day involves leaping into a class two whitewater rapid and learning to rescue and be rescued. Advanced members of the class assisted the guides from their kayaks and learned valuable paddling skills. This day was the first experience in moving water for many students, and those who enjoyed it have now chosen to be in the whitewater group for the remainder of the spring sports term. 10 students will be paddling kayaks in whitewater at least once a week from now until the end of the school year.

The Outdoor Pursuits class is hosting a whitewater kayak race this coming weekend at Horseshoe Bend on the Cowichan River. Racers from throughout the province will attend and compete. Many of the Outdoor Pursuits students will also compete, with the remainder of the class volunteering by judging, timing and assisting in the running of the event. Race day is Sunday April 18 with action beginning at 10 AM and wrapping up approximately 2 PM. All spectators are welcome.
