Our Two Unsung Heroes

Last week, torrential rain and flooding in BC resulted in all highway traffic to Mill Bay from Victoria being closed. As Brentwood students returned from a restful break, they were faced with unforeseen circumstances.

With flooding and mudslides blocking the Malahat section of the Trans-Canada, busses were unable to return to school and a sense of panic began to spread.

But travel plans were quickly adjusted and two determined BFAs, Ms Legassicke and Mr Millar, were put in charge. This dynamic duo was tasked with collecting students from the Swartz Bay ferry terminal and the Victoria airport, then dropping them off at the Brentwood Bay ferry. To avoid the Malahat highway, students would catch a ferry to Mill Bay where they would be picked up by a school bus.

The return to school would not have been possible without Ms Legassicke and Mr Millar looking out for us. After chaperoning The Victoria Whale Watching & Foodie Trip alongside Mr Lee, Ms Legassicke was immediately tasked with staying extra nights in Victoria. Similarly, Mr Millar flew in from Calgary earlier that morning and joined Ms Legassicke: "The midterm break turned into an unexpected but exciting adventure” admitted Mr Millar. These two unsung heroes made sure no student was ever hungry, dehydrated, or worried about the trip back to school.

From one stop to the next this duo made students’ arrival special. No matter how intricate the pickup schedule was, this pair made sure to include food stops, Starbucks runs, and donuts on stand-by. For Mr Millar, “the experience proved vital for understanding the importance of Tim’s donuts and coffee in times of uncertainty.”

The journey back to school was not easy. Ms Legassicke adds that, “During the entire process Mr Millar [and I] were so impressed with the students. They showed their fair share of Grit, including standing in the cold for an hour for the ferry.”  As stated by Ms Legassicke, after students said goodbye to her and Mr Millar, they hopped on a ferry where they would have to endure the cold weather for the duration of their ride. For some Brentonians, this was their first taste of a Canadian winter.  At last, students were able to return to campus after this unexpected situation.

Thank you Mr Millar, Ms Legassicke and the transportation team for all of their efforts during this tough time.
