Our Olympians Are Back!
This Saturday marked the Second Annual Brentwood-Shawnigan Duel Race where the Varsity Eights competed for each school. Succeeding the senior races was an alumni race. The Olympic Eight, our alumni boat, boasts eight of Brentwood’s 22 Olympian rowers:
Cox: Tam Barkley ’83
8: Blair Horn ’79
7: Malcolm Howard ’01
6: Dave Ross ’81
5: Darren Barber ’87
4: Spencer Crowley ’07
3: Dave Calder ’96
2: Pat Walter ’77
1: Scott Frandsen ’98
Between the eight of them, they have participated in 17 Olympic Games.
They all returned for the christening of the John Queen II and AC Carr VI, in honor of their past coaches, Tony Carr and John Queen.
There was also a second alumni crew, of more recent rowing grads, who leapt out to an early lead, but were unable to hold off the Olympians. Member of this Silver Medal crew included Andrew Higginson, Jordan Wille, Oliver Amiel, Jeff Birtwistle, Noah O'Connell, Malcolm Conn, Lance Bai, Julian Subda, Connor McGuigan.
The rowing fraternity, alumni, parents and friends with incredible donations are responsible for the three boat funds at the school: the AC Carr, John Queen and Women's Legacy fund. The funds have raised nearly $600,000 to replace the top crews' equipment every three years.
Tony and John cofounded the Brentwood Regatta in 1971 featuring Lakeside School, Claremont, and Brentwood. The Regatta, which now lasts three days with over 180 races, originally took three hours to run. Tony has been with the Brentwood College Rowing Club from its start in 1964. He has been a crucial part of 55 of the 100 national championships that Brentwood has won.
The results of the duel were an impressive showing of our club’s hard work this fall. All three races were won by Brentwood. A big thanks to Shawnigan for the friendly competition and to all the alumni for returning for this special event.
