The students are settling back into the Brentwood routine and getting to know their new roommates. Everyone is overjoyed to see their peers and teachers again but hugs are not in order as safety is a priority here on campus. House meetings, sign-ins, house jobs, laundry days, room inspections - we are really back at school! But it won’t be quite the same as before.

COVID-19 protocols have been put in place to keep everyone safe while at Brentwood. Students are social distancing and wearing masks when interacting with others outside of their brother-sister house cohorts. Classes are seated in cohorts and hand sanitizing stations are everywhere. Crooks Hall is a spaced bustling with students getting used to this new normal. Socially distanced cafeteria line ups, masks, cohort seating, staggered meals, and thermal imaging cameras are just some of many ways to keep the students safe in Crooks Hall. “In the beginning, it was very odd and now it’s very smooth” says food services member Joan. The kitchen staff have been working tirelessly to organize meals and safety precautions in the cafeteria.

Even with all the changes at Brentwood, we have some exciting things planned! The Terry Fox Run is today and the students are eager. “I am excited to run and I love that I am supporting a great cause in the process,” says Nevé M, Hope ‘23. With safety in mind, four runs will be staggered throughout the day amongst houses.

Additionally, more outdoor movie nights and country-themed dinners are in store for students in the upcoming weeks. Back to the Future was last Saturday’s outdoor movie and Shrek was projected oceanside last night. Saudi Arabia Day will be abundant with delicious delicacies and festive decorations hanging in Crooks Hall this Wednesday. Last Wednesday was Canada Day featuring Nanaimo bars, pancakes, maple syrup and back bacon. Thanks to Food Services, the SAC and Ms McLean for all that!

As the smoke from West Coast fires begins to clear, we remember the important things that are keeping us safe here. “Why aren’t you wearing your mask?” is the new “Where is your blazer?” Rather than “Pull up your socks!” it’s “Sanitize your hands!”

We are all adapting to our own ‘new normal.’ Here on campus, we are learning quickly.
