Other Duties as Assigned
Working at a boarding school is demanding. No doubt about it, it is an exhausting, all-encompassing vocation. Take a Houseparent for example: they wake up early each school day so that they can get 50 students ready for classes. They teach during the academic morning and then coach or teach most afternoons; in the evening they help monitor the study sessions before putting the same 50 students to bed at night!
What would possibly inspire people to live and work at a boarding school?
At Brentwood College School the rewards are obvious. The students at this school are motivated and motivating. Energizing and energized. They are keen and willing to be a part of this amazing community and because of this, they inspire us and keep us all young at heart. Living at Brentwood makes us all realize what a special place it is; it allows us to be uniquely connected to the students.
To work at Brentwood, you must realize that there is no such thing as ‘9 to 5’. On top of this, the unexpected can occur and we are all committed to being available should the need arise. It is no wonder that our yearly contracts include the ominous, open-ended warning: ‘other duties as assigned’. Working here is an acceptance of a lifestyle; it is not a job.
I have lived on the Brentwood campus with my family since 1994. Its rhythms are my rhythms. I have played many different roles here and moved houses 4 times – all within the Brentwood College campus. What makes Brentwood special are the students and the kind of faculty and staff these students attract. For adults, Brentwood College School is a fantastic place to raise a family, teach, work, live and grow. Obviously, the spectacular setting and modern facilities make it easier, but what really makes it so enjoyable, and what keeps us here year after year, are the students.
