Opening Doors to Opening Day

4 May 2018

For our Women’s and Men’s Varsity 8+s, one of the numerous goals of the Brentwood Regatta was to earn an invitation to the spectacular and prestigious Windermere Cup/Opening Day Regatta in Seattle on Saturday, May 5. Rowed over a course of 2000 meters through the Montlake Cut that joins Lake Washington to Portage Bay, this event is lined with hundreds of yachts and tens of thousands of spectators.  Launching from The University of Washington Conibear Shellhouse, the race is the official Opening Day of Boating Season and is quickly followed by the Seattle Yacht Club's Opening Day Parade of yachts. For many rowers it is a once-in-a-lifetime nautical extravaganza that etches itself into one’s memory. With strong performances in the U19 Eights this weekend, both the Women’s and Men’s 8+s have booked their bus for this weekend to cross the Peace Arch and head south in I5 for the big event. They may be passing through Bellingham as you read this. May the 4th be with them. Jim Ganley, Privett ‘34
