Oh, Great Gillespie Field!

Brentwood students rejoice! In the hallowed halls of every house, from Ellis to Hope, you can hear the students singing songs of glee! Third term has arrived and each evening Brentwood students, new and old, flee from their rooms to gather at a sacred meeting spot on our amazing campus: Gillespie Field is the place to be on a sunny day, or evening!

As Mr Patel stated in Assembly, there are over 350 students on this campus that have never experienced a Brentwood third term. Thanks to the amazing job of our campus celebs, the Covid Team, we remain on campus this year, a gift for which every Brentwood student is thankful.

For those of you who have never had the opportunity to be on campus, on a sunny night in term three Gillespie Field is a sight to see. From your easy-going blanket dwellers playing indie tunes to the kings and queens of the flying disc, every member of the Brentwood community migrates to our ‘watering hole’ at least once a week to bask in dazzling West Coast weather. “It truly is the best part of the third term at Brentwood” Yang L, Privett ‘22 assured me.

Every student has a favourite activity to partake in on the field. There are Mr Gage’s favourites, the ballers playing intense games of H.O.R.S.E and bump, sharpening their skills for next winter. The skaters, dawning their helmets, skate anything in sight, from stairs to curbs, making our campus their playground. Then you have your football lovers, throwing deep bombs and running routes taught to them by none other than Mr Collis Handford. Omnipresent, the blanket-dwellers sit calm and cool alongside the residents of Rogers House sunbathing in their lawn chairs.

But the head honchos, the trendsetters, the true athletes, are the Spikeball players. From intense tournaments to lazy rallies, you can expect at least five nets on the field at all times. Some of the plays produced are truly next level. Ned B, Privett ‘23, a Spikeball connoisseur, shared that “It’s a great way to get out in the awesome weather and enjoy the company of your friends while also playing such a surprisingly physical game.”

Like many other things at Brentwood, all of the fun had on the field could not be possible without the amazing hard work of the entire grounds and landscaping team. The Brentwood community would like to give them a huge thank you for all of the effort and care they put into our treasured Gillespie Field.

We will continue to enjoy these nights on the Field for the next three months and members of the class of 2021 will move forward with terrific memories on the soft, green home of the First XV. So, wherever you are, we wish you wonderful weather and advise you to go outside whenever possible, as it truly is the best place to be this time of year!
