ODP Winter Adventures

30 December 2013
Dan Norman
Students who have signed up for Outdoor Pursuits in the winter term have already experienced some of the highlights of outdoor life in the Cowichan Valley. This term has strong representation from the Grade 9 class, as well as a few experienced ODP veterans who are on hand to help everyone enjoy their outings safely. Although the new sport term has just begun, the group has hiked up Mt. Finlayson, Cobble Hill Mountain, and along the Trans-Canada Trail over the Kinsol Trestle. They have proved they possess some survival skills by putting up a shelter and lighting a campfire to boil water in the soggy woods of November. By canoe, they have surveyed the scenery of Mill Bay, observing salmon swimming into the Millstream and seals chasing the salmon. They now have lots of excellent outdoor experiences under their belts. Just before exams, they also enjoyed a day at the climbing gym in Nanaimo. When they return from the December holidays, kayak safety sessions at the Ladysmith pool will be followed by a January of learning to make impulsive kayaks go straight on the waters of Mill Bay.
