October Sports Review
As you may know, things are never dull in the world of Brentwood Athletics. In the first term we place a heavy emphasis on team sport. There is no better way to get to know your peers, and the lessons learned from playing on a team last a lifetime. I can’t help but feel our teams have an advantage over most in that the relationships they develop are remarkably close-knit and the athletes truly are playing for each other. I suppose when you live together that happens!
There have been a number of impressive team accomplishments already this term. We will start with our Junior Boys Soccer team which has been playing outstanding soccer all season. They won the ISA Championship three weeks ago, went undefeated in league play to capture the Mid-sland title, and then this week they capped off their storybook season by dominating at the Island Championship and coming away with a well-deserved gold medal! This is a remarkable accomplishment for a 2A school as, at the junior level, there is no tiering and our school must compete against the top teams from 3A and 4A in addition to our own tier. The Senior Boys soccer team also had a nice month and advanced the North Island Championship Tournament thanks to a terrific 4-1 win over Ballenas. At North Islands they went 2-2 and qualified for the Islands November 9 and 10.
In rugby, our Grade 9 rugby team has shown tremendous growth all season. For most on the team, this has been their first experience ever in rugby and yet they have held their own against some of the top programs in the province. Our Grade 10 and 11 rugby boys have also looked good in some pre-season exhibition games, including a nice performance against a travelling team from Cyfarthfa, Wales.
In rowing our crews have had a busy preseason. We continued the tradition of hosting a number of crews here on campus from Green Lake (WA) and both clubs had some highly competitive training sessions together. We also achieved some excellent results in our first competition of the year (including four 1st place finishes) at the Head of the Gorge.
Meanwhile, our Senior Field Hockey girls having been looking strong as they captured silver at Islands and have earned a berth to the provincial championship in Victoria where they go in as the #5 seed in the province. They won their opener 3-2 over GW Graham and their second game 1-0 over Southern Okanagan to advance to the quarter finals.
In volleyball, our Junior Girls played some excellent volleyball at the ISA championship where they finished fourth and they will be gearing up for Mid-Islands and preparing to host Islands over the next few weeks. Meanwhile our Senior Volleyball team is coming off an impressive couple of weeks having won gold at our Brentwood Invitational and then silver at the ISA championship. November will be busy for them as they gear up for Islands and hopefully prepare for a big run at Provincials which take place in Kelowna this year.
November looks to be another exciting month and we wish all our teams the best.
