October Sports Review 2019

30 October 2019
Blake Gage - Director of Athletics
As you may know, things are never dull in the world of Brentwood Athletics. In the first term, we place a heavy emphasis on team sport. There is no better way to get to know your peers and the lessons learned from playing on a team last a lifetime. It is easy to see the benefits of working closely together towards specific goals in both practice and competition, as we learn to work hard, respect and partner with our teammates and coaches and balance our sport with the other commitments in our lives. That said, team sport is also all about building relationships, and thus, sport can serve as a real asset as we welcome students from all around the world into our school first term.  For the last four weeks our teams have definitely been busy! Our Field Hockey teams have been competing at a number of different levels and it has been impressive to see how much these girls have improved. Some of these girls have never played the game before but it has not stopped them from competing extremely hard on the pitch. Last weekend, our senior girls field hockey team won bronze at the Island Championships and this week they are playing in challenge game for a berth to the Provincial Championship Tournament in November. Our girls volleyball teams have also impressed to date. We have already hosted a number of tournaments in the Foote Athletic Center and look forward to hosting the Senior Girls Island Championship in November. Meanwhile, our development teams have actually been thrown into competition with “A” teams from other high-schools and more than held their own. Our Junior girls A team has improved each weekend and is going into the mid-island tournament (hosted this week at Brentwood) as the #1 seed in the division with hopes of qualifying for Islands and maybe even provincials. The Junior boys soccer team won their mid-island league in convincing fashion and we hosted a terrific Island Championship this week at Brentwood where the boys played some excellent soccer and managed o finish in 5th place overall on the Island. The Senior Boys Soccer team also won the mid-island league and North Island Tournament and are all set to go into the Islands next week as the #1 seed. Our Cross Country team has also had an excellent competitive season this year and we had terrific participation at the Island Championship. This year eight of our athletes earned berths to the provincial meet which takes place in Vancouver over midterm.  In rugby, our Grade 9s have shown remarkable improvement and are starting to hold their own against some of the top programs in BC. Mr Smith and Mr Branchflower are very pleased with how hard this group has worked and how well they are coming together. November promises to be an equally exciting month – tune into our twitter accounts for updates on all the playoff action. Go Brentwood!
