October Athletics Review

6 November 2018
Blake Gage - Director of Athletics
As you may know, things are never dull in the world of Brentwood Athletics. In the first term we place a heavy emphasis on team sport. There is no better way to get to know your peers and the lessons learned from playing on a team last a lifetime. It is easy to see the benefits of working closely together towards specific goals in both practice and competition, as we learn to work hard, respect and partner with our teammates and coaches, and balance our sport with other commitments in our lives. That said, team sport is also all about building relationships, and thus, sport can serve as a real asset as we welcome students from all around the world into our school first term.   For the last four weeks, our teams have definitely been busy! Our Field Hockey teams have been competing at a number of different levels and it has been impressive to see how much these girls have improved. Some of these girls have never played the game before but it has not stopped them from competing extremely hard on the pitch. Last weekend, our First 11 Field Hockey team won bronze at the Island Championships and have earned a berth back to the Provincials next week. Our girls’ volleyball teams have also impressed to date. We have hosted a number of tournaments in the new Foote Athletic Center and it has been a wonderful venue for all teams involved. Our development teams have actually been thrown into competition with “A” teams from other high-schools and more than held their own. Our Junior girls team has improved each weekend, won the Mid-Island Tournament and has qualified for Islands. Our Varsity Girls have been competing with some of the top teams from across the province and getting better each week. This past weekend they earned bronze at the always competitive ISA tournament and they look poised for yet another run at the Provincial championship at the end of November. The Junior Boys Soccer team won their Mid-Island league in convincing fashion to earn a berth at Islands where they are currently playing. The Senior Boys Soccer team also won the Mid-Island league and won bronze at the North Island Tournament: they have earned a berth to Islands.   Our Cross Country team has also had an excellent competitive season this year and we had more athletes competing at Islands than ever before. This year six of our athletes actually earned berths to the provincial meet which took place in Nanaimo on November 3rd.  Rsults can be found here: https://bcxc.ca/r.html In rugby, our Grade 9s have shown remarkable improvement and are starting to hold their own against some of the top programs in BC. Mr Smith and Mr Branchflower are very pleased with how hard this group has worked and how well they are coming together. November promises to be an equally exciting month – tune into our twitter accounts for updates on all the playoff action @BrentwoodSports Go Brentwood!
