November Sports Review

November marks the end of our first term of sports and a number of teams wrapped up very successful competitive seasons in November. Cross Country In a wire-to-wire performance that delighted her audience and disheartened her competitors, Tara B, Mackenzie ‘13 demolished the field over a 4.4 KM course in 16.03 at the British Columbia Athletics Provincial Cross Country Championships in Abbotsford last month and qualified herself for the Nationals. Soccer Our Senior Boys’ Soccer team had a strong showing coming fourth in the North Island Tournament to earn a berth into Island Championship play which took place, unfortunately, over midterm break. Despite being short-handed, the team battled hard and hung tough with a couple of close losses to some of the top teams from Victoria. Volleyball In volleyball, our Junior Girls showed tremendous growth over the course of the season and captured Gold at the Mid-Island Championship and represented us very well at Islands. The Senior Girls, after winning Silver at North Islands, hosted the Island Championship right here at the Brentwood Woodward Sportsplex. There was a wonderful atmosphere in the gym all weekend long and the team battled valiantly but ultimately came up just short against two of the top teams in the province, including eventual provincial champion Lambrick Park. Still, the Bronze medal finish left lots to be proud of and with such a young roster, the future looks very bright for the team. Field Hockey Our Junior Girls’ Field Hockey team also wrapped up a remarkable season. This was a team that just continued to get better and better each and every week and there is no question they were playing their best hockey of the year going into the Island Championship. In the opening round, Brentwood showed how much they had improved by defeating Kelsey for the first time all year. They then proceeded to carve through the competition all the way to the final where they played one of the most exciting games in recent history finally losing in a second set of penalty shots! It was definitely a game for the ages. Nobody would have envisioned this team winning a Silver at the Islands when the season first started so this was a great finish to what was a terrific season for the junior girls. Rowing While the season for the rowers doesn’t come into full bloom until the new year there were a number of Best in the Boathouse races as well as a trip to Seattle for the Frostbite Regatta. Notably, one of our Grade 12 rowers, Tara C, Allard ‘14 signed her letter of intent to study at and row for the Duke University Blue Devils in Durham, North Carolina. This is a wonderful accomplishment for Tara as her years of rowing and academic dedication have paid off with a scholarship that reflects her love for the sport and her pursuit of academic excellence. Winter Season With December upon us, second term sport is underway. We look forward to watching our basketball and hockey teams in competitive action in the months ahead. Senior Boys Basketball has started the ball rolling with a Silver medal at the ISAs this past weekend and the Senior Girls have beaten Cowichan and Salt Spring in early season action. The Senior Ice Hockey team also dispatched Kelsey 6-3 in their season opener.
