November Sports Review
A number of teams wrapped up very successful competitive seasons in November.
Our Senior Boys’ Soccer team had a thrilling playoff run to end their season. After winning a challenge game to qualify for the North Island Tournament, the team looked to be in some trouble as they dropped their first two games of the tournament and were once again on the brink of elimination. However, with their backs against the wall, the team rallied and played two outstanding games to finish the tournament and earned a berth to the Island Championship! At Islands, thanks in part to some additions from the junior team, the boys played excellent soccer and finished 5th overall. The team was literally 1 goal away from earning a berth to provincials and it was a terrific way for the boys to end their season.
The only better soccer story than our Senior Boys team was the remarkable Junior Boys season. This team made some Brentwood history going undefeated from start to finish and, along the way, winning the ISA, Mid-Island and finally, the Island Championship. Their run through the Island Tournament was particularly impressive as no team came with two goals of the Brentwood boys. When you consider that teams at the Junior level have to compete against schools from all tiers (A, 2A, 3A and 4A), this is a remarkable accomplishment for a small 2A school. Congratulations to the boys and coaches Collis and Kulai on an outstanding season!
In volleyball, our Junior Girls showed tremendous growth over the course of the season and captured Gold at the Mid-Island Championship and represented very well at Islands finishing sixth overall and earning a rare berth to the Junior Provincial Championship Tournament. The girls are off this week to Vancouver to test their mettle against some of the best teams in the province.
The Senior Girls are also currently in the midst of their playoff run. After convincingly winning the North Island Championship, the girls were in tough at Islands where they found themselves down tow sets to nothing in the final against the host team from Woodlands Secondary. Somehow, our girls managed to right the ship and came storming back to win the next three sets and capture Island gold! The girls are now gearing up for the Provincial Championships in Kelowna that run December 2-5. The girls are entering the tournament as the #5 seed in the province. Please wish them luck!
Grade 9 Rugby
In rugby, our Junior Colts Boys finished a successful XV’s campaign in a tightly contested battle against Collingwood school. While Collingwood came away with the victory, Brentwood’s 4th place finish among ISA BC schools was a big step forward for the program and the improvement shown throughout the course of the season was impressive.
Our Junior Girls’ Field Hockey team also wrapped up an impressive season. The team battled valiantly in the Island Championship where they went undefeated, but thanks to a strange system of goal differential, somehow ended up in third. Nonetheless, it was a great tournament and a great season for the girls who finished the year on a terrific run; they did not lose a single game in the last month of the season!
Meanwhile, the Senior Girls won Island silver and qualified for the Provincial Championship in Victoria. The girls played some excellent field hockey at provincials but lost in a shootout in their quarterfinal game against York House. Nonetheless, the girls showed tremendous fortitude and regrouped quickly as they turned around and won their last two games of the tournament to finish 5th in the province! It was a terrific end to a very impressive season.
With December upon, us second term sport gets underway. We look forward to watching our basketball and hockey teams in competitive action in the months ahead.
