No Waterloo for these Math Marvels

28 February 2011

This past Thursday, more than 80 mathematics students in Grades 9 to 11 challenged the University of Waterloo Math Contest. Mr. Wardrop, Head of Math, knows that the contest “allows some of our strongest mathematicians to test themselves against the best in the country”. Many of our students achieve certificates for achieving results in the top 25% of all participants. Results will be posted in April.
If you, dear reader, would like to test your math acumen against one of the questions our Math 11 students wrote try:
Four numbers w, x, y, z satisfy w < x < y < z. Each of the six possible pairs of distinct numbers has a different sum. The four smallest sums are 1, 2, 3, and 4. What is the sum of all possible values of z?
a)    4    b) 13/2        c) 17/2        d) 15/2        e) 7
