New Hopelings Bring Hope to Hope House

8 October 2021

This year Hope House has received many new students across grades, personalities, and nationalities. This flock brought an energetic new dynamic to Hope that was welcomed with gleaming smiles and friendly arms. The dazzling energy remains in the house as the new students settle in and start their Brentwood lives. What does it really take to be a new student at Brentwood in 2021?

Sarah O, Hope ‘23, says her least favourite part of starting her school career at  Brentwood are the “house jobs because they are annoying, though I understand I need to do my part when living amongst so many amazing people”. House jobs are definitely not everyone’s favourite! I know, personally, that coming from a household with few responsibilities, to a boarding house where you are forced to account for yourself - including emptying the garbage, cleaning the dishes, vacuuming the hallways and dusting your room -  is quite a challenge.

Given all the joyful laughter and chatter from the new students, it is difficult to discern any sign of challenges the new students are facing. Down all the stairwells, along the hallways, and out the doors, the novices laugh amicably and talk warmly. Their energy has beautifully elevated the incredible pre-existing energy we had in the house last year.

In terms of size, this year’s Hope House is junior heavy, with loads of wonderful new Grade 8s, 9s, and 10s. The halls are filled; not one room is empty. This adds to the atmosphere: the diversity of personalities found in the halls of Hope is deeply special.

How are these new students feeling now, after about four weeks of being a Brentwood student? Tatum L, Hope ‘24, says “Leading up to my first day at Brentwood I was very nervous about living with 50 other girls. Amazingly, I was welcomed with open arms by all of Hope. Even after only a month of school, I have created amazing connections with so many Hopelings and I am so excited for the rest of the year!”. That is incredible to hear from such a particularly wonderful addition to the house. Hope has also obtained many new athletes this year, along with artists, and we are ready to take on all the interhouse events with our newfound talent! Hope House’s Captain, Lisa M, Hope ‘22, has stated that “Hope and Privett are going to win this year.” The confidence in our interhouse abilities is proven by the promise all the new students show - and our victory at Fun & Games.

I speak on behalf of all the returning students when I say that we have never had such a great batch of new students! Thank you to all of the initiates for your enthusiasm and open-mindedness this year! It is a treat to watch you grow.
