New Curriculum Assessments

7 October 2018
Cheryl Murtland - Director of Academics
British Columbian schools continue to transition to new curriculum approaches and graduation requirements and Brentwood College School is no exception. I wanted to take this time to inform our community about how we are going to facilitate the numeracy assessment and the final Grade 12 English Provincial Exam. Because our Closing Ceremonies occur on June 21, 2019, our opportunity to have students write the numeracy assessment is in January. The numeracy assessment is a graduation requirement. A link to more information is at the end of this article. This is not a math exam, but an assessment of student fluency in numeracy. Students will be asked to analyze a variety of data sets and solve problems with some choice. In this way, the assessment is not associated with any particular course. The Grade 12 English Provincial Exam is valued at 40% of the final grade for the student. Typically, the numeracy assessment will happen in a student’s Grade 10 year. This year, we must offer it to all of our students in grades 10, 11 and 12. This will all happen on the 22nd and 24th of January. 22nd - Grade 12s write the numeracy assessment at 2pm 24th - Grade 12s write the English 12 Provincial Exam at 8:15am 24th - Grade 10s and 11s write the numeracy assessment at 8:15am In November, a small group of students will be piloting the literacy assessment that will replace the English 12 Provincial Exam. This will not be associated with a course and is not marked for a percentage. It will provide us with some information to help prepare for the implementation of this assessment for Grade 12s in the 2019-2020 year. We will work with students to ensure that they are prepared for the assessments and feel confident as they complete them in January.
