There will be a presentation in the lecture theater given by Reyna Jenkins tomorrow at 7:30 pm. Reyna is a graduate student from the University of Victoria's Earth and Ocean Sciences Department. The lecture is entitled "Surfing an Ocean of Data" and relates to the NEPTUNE project which monitors the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of Vancouver Island. Brentwood is about to become linked to this project by hosting one of UVic's ocean observatory data stations. If you would like to attend this presentation, please contact Dave McCarthy (mccarthd@brentwood.bc.ca).

Presentation Summary:

The development of ocean observatories is transforming ocean science, offering massive quantities of data in real-time, 24/7/365. Based at UVic, NEPTUNE (North-East Pacific Time-series Undersea Networked Experiments) Canada and VENUS (Victoria Experimental Network Under the Sea) are leaders in ocean observing systems. In fact, NEPTUNE Canada is the world's largest cabled seafloor observatory. In 2009, a new program called "Data from the Deep, Judgment from the Crowds" received funding from CANARIE. As part of this program, a mini-observatory at Brentwood College will be initiated. This talk will describe the observatories, some of their oceanographic and marine science objectives, and Oceans 2.0.
