The students who find themselves drawn to Model United Nations & Public Speaking are determined to be heard no matter the circumstances, and the 2020-2021 year proved that resilience and a genuine love for speaking and diplomacy is the foundation of the program. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic seriously impeding the club’s ability to attend in-person conferences and competitions, we found new and innovative ways to interact with the speaking arts community.

Carla Denkema, Leo K, Eva Kamimura, Adrienne Roy, and Nicole Little led the charge at the start of the year through their fine online showing at the annual BC Provincial Public Speaking Competition. Soon after, Tyasha Sanyal and Adrienne brought back Outstanding Delegate Awards from ShawMUN 2020, inspiring students to engage with the MUN elements provided by the program. Keeping true to the Brentwood reputation of MUN excellence, Eva Kamimura & I were awarded Best Research & Best Delegate at VMUN 2021, the largest student-run MUN competition in North America.

Ms Legassicke and Ms Cuk made sure to keep things engaging in the classroom too, as at any moment you could walk in on the group delivering impromptu speeches and dramatic dialogues, reciting poems, or engaging in roundtable discussions all to further develop our speaking skills. What started as a group of students quickly turned into a community where everyone felt comfortable sharing their own ideas without judgment.

B-MUN ‘21 was the final initiative of the program where Eva, Sasha Imbleau and I came together to create Brentwood’s own Model United Nations conference in the hopes of providing students with the opportunity to experience MUN without being constrained by a computer screen.

2021 marked the beginning of something special at Brentwood, and I am so glad that I was able to participate and contribute as MUN/Public Speaking blossomed into a distinctive art this year.
