Mucho Burrito Makes Mucho Champions

Friday, February 11, 2022 -

The 2022 Basketball season has been awaited since the pandemic halted competitive sports in March 2020. Unfortunately, unlike our Senior Boys Team, which has played 17 games so far in their competitive season, our Senior Girls Basketball team remains in the single digits - having only played seven games this whole season - three without the Senior Volleyball players.
Despite major challenges, every sports afternoon, our Senior Girls have not stopped practicing. Leading up to our February Mid-Term Break, we faced the hard truth of living in a pandemic. With many players’ health being compromised, the team was forced to cancel a full week of games.
As The North-Island Championship quickly approaches, it was critical for our girls to shake off the midterm laziness. When other Brentonians were enjoying their last days of freedom before returning to campus, six of Senior Girls – plus two sublime juniors – reunited at Lambrick Park Secondary for their fifth full-squad game of the season. Head Coach Mrs. Napier explained that “It’s important we play a AA team as we head into playoffs. If we dominate, our ranking will help us in the future.”
The game tipped off at 5 pm on Monday, February 7th.  Brentwood was first on the scoreboard with a playbook-perfect backdoor cut from Miranda NP, Alex ‘23 and a precise bounce pass from Jensa NG, Mack ‘23 that cut through Lanbrick’s defence for a quick layup. Lambrick, however, bounced back with hot hands and hit back-to-back-to-back shots from both inside and outside the arc. Our Senior Girls, still a bit rusty from their five-day break, struggled to run their offence as the first couple of minutes went by, but after a 6-0 run, managed to catch up and bring Lambrick’s lead down to one basket: 10-13.
Throughout the game, we saw hustle plays from Ona G, Mack ‘23, high-low connections from junior guard, Ruby M, Allard ‘25 to post player, Jocelyn L, Mack ‘22 and unprecedented free throws from Kiara J, Alex ‘23. After the third quarter, the girls had dominated the game and managed to get ahead by double digits. The match saw fantastic performances, with everyone getting on the scoresheet. Miranda NP, Alex ‘23 led the charge with an impressive 30 point night!
This weekend the girls start their playoff run. With one more game under their belts, the team already has shown tremendous improvements. “I’m excited to see how far we can go as a team,” exclaims Sophie B, Mack ‘22. Sophie was on the Junior team that went to provincial’s before the pandemic. “It was a great experience and the end goal this year!”
Our athletes will continue to train hard, get lots of rest, and fuel right, one post-victory Mucho Burrito quesadilla at a time! #postgamemunch
