Mr. Skardal, the newest member of the English department, is loving his first term at Brentwood. A graduate of Brandon University, Ryan grew up in the farming town of Balder, Manitoba (population 300), where his high school class contained eight students. His roles at Brentwood include teaching English, coaching MUN & Debate, advising Ellis House Grade 12s, and prep duty in Ellis on Thursdays.
His favourite books are Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, The Road by Cormack McCarthy, The Shipping News by Annie Proulx, and Any Human Heart by William Boyd. Stephen King is the author who kick-started his current infatuation with novels. Mr. Skardal’s short time at Brentwood, the aspects that stand out the most to him are Ellis House (the best house), the delicious caf food, the ocean view, the “fantastic” English teachers, and the strong sense of community. He decided to go into teaching after an epiphanic moment, in which he realized how much gratitude he owed to the teachers who had put up with and cared for him throughout his immature years.
When Mr.Skardal isn’t busy, you can find him jogging with the cross country team, reading a good book, and occasionally writing. In the near future, he plans to learn how to roast coffee beans. He just needs to find some green beans to roast, he says, “and then probably give them to Mr. Collis…if they aren’t good. I’ll keep them if they’re good.” Liam B, Ellis ‘16
