Mosqoy From Peru to Mill Bay

Mosqoy is the Quechua word for “dream”. Deep in the southern Peruvian Andes, founder Ashli Akins, currently a UVic student, had a dream that she has since made into a reality. Ashli’s goals for the people she met there were to provide post-secondary education, to preserve the Q’ente Textile Revitalization Society, and to connect the elders and youth of the Andes.

This is exactly what she did, and Brentwood’s SAC has been sponsoring 2 students, Elmer and Elizabeth, through MOSQOY for the past 2 years.

During last week’s school assembly, two students currently learning English at UVIC through this program came and spoke to us about their life in Peru. Elvira and Ebhert spoke of their hardships: Elvira spoke of how she is constantly discriminated against because of her indigenous ethnicity, and Ebhert, at the age of 8, was washing dishes in a restaurant from the moment school was over until nearly 10pm.

After the assembly, Elvira and Ebhert joined Mr. Wismer’s Comparative Government class, where, through a translator, they defined the extent of corruption and patronage within their unitary presidential system. It was amazing to see the students speak of adversities in their homeland, and it is truly an honor for Brentwood to sponsor the students of the MOSQOY organization.
