Monday in Alexandra House

23 November 2018

A day typical day starts off when everyone’s feet hit the floor, promptly, at 7:00am. Walking down the hall, you’ll be greeted by the early birds who are fully dressed in their uniforms on their way to breakfast and avoided by the half-asleep girls in their sweatpants. Ms Mais will be wandering the halls to make sure all of her girls are awake and well. While on the way to breakfast, it is hard not to notice the beaming cotton candy sunrise that is taking place over the Saanich Inlet.  After breakfast, it is time to get dressed and ready for the demands of the day that lies ahead. Music will sometimes play from all corners of the house with a variety of sounds that are unique to each room! Then the bell at 8:10 will ring throughout the whole school calling all students to class. On the way out of the door, Ms Mais will occasionally be waiting to make sure her girls’ kilts are unrolled and their socks are pulled as high as possible.  The academic morning on a Monday consists of two blocks, cookie break, Advisor Meeting, one more class and then lunch to finish the morning off. After lunch, all the girls will head off to their fine art classes around campus.  After dinner in Crooks Hall all of the Alex girls return to the house for 7:15 sign in with Mr Warner and Ms Mais. Mr Warner is usually finishing up his last few bites of dinner and preparing himself for the long night of math help ahead of him. Sign-in is also when the dorms are reminded what chores they are on. Chores are usually to be completed before or after prep, depending on the chore.  Monday nights also feature the weekly house meetings so everyone crams into the tight, but cozy, common room to talk about the week ahead! If there is a birthday, a cake will be brought in and cut to the sweet melody of “Happy Birthday” filling any empty space left in the common room. After the meeting, phones are handed in to maximize productivity during prep.  Alex House sits quiet and still until 15 minutes before prep concludes. 9:15 is when the booming music begins again and all the girls gather in the bathrooms for shower parties and their nightly routines! It is a time for all the girls to be loud and let out any pent up energy they may still have from their incredibly busy days. When the house slowly begins to settle in preparation for bed time, the Grade 12 prefects on duty go around to each Grade 9 and 10 room to tuck them in! This tuck-in consists of a heartfelt hug and some light conversation about the girls’ day. Around 11:00, Ms Mais or Mrs Warner go around to do a final sweep of the house to make sure everyone is sound asleep in their beds.  Good Night Alex. See you tomorrow. Hannah C ‘19
