Model UN in Mill Bay

23 December 2015

On the morning of November 28th, the air was full of excitement, and anticipation filled the campus, as students from 12 schools—dressed up in their freshly-ironed blazers and suits—rushed into the Bunch Theatre. Approximately two hundred people from different schools, not as students, but as delegates representing a country, took a seat in their committee rooms with a determination to resolve global crises and change the world. Island Model United Nations this year challenged the tradition of standard Model UN committees and presented the delegates with refreshing fictional committees such as The Hunger Games Committee and The Wizarding Council. Apart from these brilliant creative ones, other committees included The Arab League, The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, The Disarmament and International Security Committee, and The Joint Crisis Committee of South and North Korea. Throughout the conference, lots happened: Kim Jong Un vetoed his committee and forced people to vote with him against their will; the Minister For Magic was assassinated; the Death Eaters took over the media; ISIS bombed 20 cultural centres around the world, and Alejandro GG, Ellis ’17 got kidnapped by the bombers. In the end, however, each committee passed its own practical and unique resolution: the crisis resolved in Iraq and Syria, the stemming of the rise of international cyber warfare, the lessening of violations of human rights within the refugees’ home countries, a proposed Korean reunification, an accord between the Order of Phoenix and the Death Eaters, and the quashed uprising in Panem. The Secretariats and staff have put a tremendous amount of effort and time into making this conference a fruitful and enjoyable one for everyone, and it seems to have paid off: the delegates loved it. IMUN 2015 was an absolute success.  Now, are there any points or motions on the floor? Motion to adjourn until IMUN 2016! Judy C, Hope ’16
