Midterm 2019

5 November 2019

For nine weeks in September and October the midterm break is a goal to be pursued, but not quite attained. It is a refuge for the fatigued. A star to every wandering bark. For most of us it is a time to recover, relax, re-create.
For others, it is just another opportunity to pursue their passions.
Here is a list of the academic, artistic, and athletic activities which our students and staff voluntarily participated in over the midterm break:
Mr Rodrigues and Ms Lagassicke took 30 seniors to eastern Canada where they toured universities in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario.
Mrs Reynolds and Mr Skardal hopped on a pre-dawn ferry on Saturday morning to join Mr Patel, Mr and Mrs Heisterman and the cross-country team at the BC championships in Abbotsford. Keaton H, Privett ‘20 came second in the senior boys race. The senior boys placed 10th as a team.
Mr Bryant flew across the continent to lead three of our debaters at the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Championships in Boston, MA.
Mr Lee and Ms Davis entertained 13 of our international students with a long weekend full of activity on our third annual Victoria Trip which included whale watching, Butchart Gardens and the legendary arcade. Food was abundant and the stories of adventures, movies and good friendships will last years.
Mr Barrett, Mr Reynolds, Mr Veenema & Ms Calhoun led the senior boys soccer team to the Island Championships in Victoria where they went 3-1, placed third, and qualified for provincials in Vancouver on Nov. 18-20.
School will resume on Wednesday morning with round two of the parent teacher interviews as well as the senior girls field hockey team at provincials, and the junior volleyball team at Islands.
I, meanwhile, will flip my pillow over to the cool side and return to my nap.
