On Monday, the Midget Boys travelled to George Bonner School for their league tournament, ranked 3rd out of eight teams. In their game earlier in the season against the hosts, Brentwood faced a tough opponent. With three forwards measuring at, or near, 6'0" the Bonner team controlled the boards and defeated Brentwood by 12 points. In the first game of the tournament, however, Brentwood came out playing a strong interior defence and held all of the Bonner posts to 6 points or fewer, winning a low scoring affair 29-23. Top scorers were Tim Liu with 10 and Jason Yu with 8. Joey Robb had a superb game at the point against his former schoolmates.
In their second game, Brentwood faced Duncan Christian School and arguably the top player in the tournament. After having defeated these same opponents in overtime during the regular season, the boys knew it would be a tough game. Unfortunately, the Brentwood team came out rather flat and found themselves down by as many as 12 points during the second quarter. Down by 11 at the half and struggling to contain the opposition's top player (who finished with 29 points), Brentwood made adjustments to tighten up their defence and began to slowly chip away at the lead throughout the 3rd quarter. It was not until the 4th quarter that Brentwood finally took the lead and were able to hang on to it through a tense final few minutes for a 54-51 victory. Sutasit Srivisarvacha shone defensively in the second half, Aaron Ausmus-Elias was all over the glass, and Tim Liu led the way offensively with a 22-point performance. With a 15-minute break between games, Brentwood then faced South Island Middle School, ranked #1, in the final. The boys started slowly and found themselves down by 14 points in the first half, but never gave up, competing to the final buzzer. The team was able to pull within 7 points on a breakway layup by Gregg Hansen with just over a minute left, but that was as close as they would get, falling 41-32. Top scorers were Tim Liu with 9 and both Jason Yu and Nick Ridenour with 4 points. The boys should be proud of their performance and congratulated for their second place overall finish in the league tournament.
