Mid-Island Redemption

21 October 2018
With a trip to the Island Championships on the line, the Junior Boys Soccer team headed uphill and west to face arch-rival, Shawnigan Lake School. An earlier league encounter with Shawnigan left the boys 0-1, losing by 2 goals to 0 in the second match of the season.  The boys had a slow start to the game. After about five minutes of our middling play, Shawnigan netted the first goal of the game. Mr Collis spent the next nail-biting 10 minutes panting and pacing until Erik L, Ellis 21 struck the ball from the top of the 18 yard box over the goalie and into the top corner to put the game into a deadlock. Moments later Jack NG won a penalty which he tucked into the bottom left corner. 2-1 Brentwood. This opened the floodgates of Brentwood scoring. Jack stole another goal before half off of a stunning through ball from Erik.  After the break, the boys came out with guns blazing. William G, Rogers ‘21, Jack R, Ellis ‘21, Olin D, Whittall ‘21 and young Davis P, Whittal ‘23 all got on the scoresheet, leaving the Stags stumped on their home soil.  Olin D pondered what turned the game around for Brentwood: “We stayed aggressive and focused on our path to Islands”. Many of us, however, would argue that it was Erik’s 20 yard screamer into the top corner, but it was a team effort, after all. The boys play their final league game of the season at Gulf Islands on Tuesday, then come home a few days early from midterm break to head to the Island Championships at Stelly’s Secondary in Victoria. There they will face giants such as Claremont Secondary, Oak Bay High, and the powerhouse and reigning champions Reynolds Secondary School. Best of luck to the boys in the coming weeks!
