Marina Nemat Speaks to Senior School

16 April 2009
David McCarthy
The much anticipated talk by Iranian-born author Marina Nemat to our senior school proved to be one of the most enthralling and powerful academic experiences we have been fortunate enough to host in our theatre. Ms. Nemat engaged her audience with humour as well as some of the jaw-dropping details of her experiences during the Iranian revolution. The students and faculty were educated in far more than the political and religious aspects of the situation and Ms. Nemat left us with a sense of how to draw on inner strength during times of crisis, how to value the things that really matter, and the importance of friends and family. A number of students were lucky enough to stay behind for an extended discussion with Ms. Nemat and learn more about her story and its relevance to today’s world. As women in Kabul protested today against a reversal of their rights, Marina’s message of the importance of human dignity and freedom reminded us of the rights we enjoy and perhaps take for granted every day.
