Malcolm Howard wins Olympic Gold Medal

27 August 2008

Malcolm Howard (Class of 2001) was a member of the Canadian Men's eight that flew down the 2000 meter course this morning in a time of 5:23 to win the gold medal at the Beijing Olympic Games. Malcolm, sitting in five seat, in his first Olympic Games, crossed the line ahead of the silver medalists from Great Britain and the bronze medalists from the United States. Prior to the Games, the Canadian Men's eight made a bold statement that they were going to Beijing with only one place on their minds -- anything less than a gold medal would be a failure. Leading from the first stroke, the Canadian Men's eight never looked back, holding off all challengers in the  last stages of the race to win by 1.2 seconds. Watching the Canadian eight on the podium receiving their gold medals and listening to them sing the national anthem as the Canadian flag was raised was incredible to see and hear. Malcolm will be visiting the school in the fall to show off his gold medal to all the students.
