Making Dreams A Reality

29 January 2020
On January 17th the Jr Girls Basketball team travelled to Dover Bay Secondary School with a chance to be the first Brentwood Junior Girls Basketball team to qualify for provincials.

The team first faced PCS and showed their strength with a 26 to 46 win! The game showcased some great shooting from Jensa NG, Mackenzie ‘23 and Miranda NP, Alex ‘23 who each made five 3’s in the game. With a big win, the girls then had to face the #9 ranked team in the province, Claremont.

The troops woke up bright and early the next day with one goal in mind, Provincials! “We have to take it one game at a time girls, focus and play to your strengths,” said Head Coach Mrs Napier. The team demonstrated a dominant defence against Claremont and took home the semi-final win, 26-49!

With two wins down, there was only one thing standing between our team and Provincials. For the championship game, the team would face powerhouse Port Alberni who showed impressive skills in beating the #8 ranked team in the province, Belmont, in their semi. The girls had a strong first quarter where they did not let Alberni take the lead. However, after that our shots just were not going in. Some girls got in foul trouble and the dream that seemed so close started to slip away.

The third quarter concluded with the girls down by eight points. On the bench, Mrs. Napier asked us one question, “Are you playing your hardest right now? Because the other team is out working every single one of you.” The team got on the floor and had a quick huddle, “Let’s go, girls, do we want this or not? This is the grit we have to show and after this comes the joy” said Jensa NG, Mack ‘23 who knows exactly what our school is about. In the fourth quarter the girls refocused and went on a 21-0 run winning the game 38-51! History was made.

Personal highlights included Jocelyn L, Mack ‘22 being named to the All-Star Team - she played the entire game, scored a ton of points and led the team in rebounds - and Miranda NP, Alex ‘23 earning the honour of Tournament MVP.

This is the first step in making our provincial dream a reality. Our team will continue to work our hardest showing grit and determination in every game we play. Next up is ISA’s at Crofton House this weekend in Vancouver where we will face some of the toughest teams in the province, including Island powerhouse St. Michaels who are ranked #3 in BC!
