Lights Out Brentwood

2 February 2023

Over the past month, the Lights Out team of students from the Environmental Advocacy class has been recording the usage of electricity in the boarding houses on campus.

The question being asked: Are there empty rooms with the light on?

As the energy used by hundreds of lightbulbs is quite significant, the goal of this project is to determine, then reduce, the number of students on campus who are wasting electricity by having lights on in empty dorm rooms.

Although the data is fairly consistent across all boarding houses, the Lights Out team found that Ellis is currently wasting the most electricity by having the highest percentage of lights on without occupants present. Privett is currently the most energy efficient. In mid-February, the house with the best performance will receive freshly baked cookies!

After sharing this information with the school during Assembly January 19, we found a 10% improvement in lights turned off. We hope to improve that further. Starting this week, we will include audits of classroom lights and smartboards left on by teachers. How thoughtful are the staff at conserving energy? Game on!

Although this project is focused on the lights in boarding houses across campus - and now classrooms - the Environmental Advocacy group hopes that the Brentwood population will become inspired by this initiative. By becoming a more energy-efficient community now, we can carry these good habits into the future as global citizens.
