Lettuce All Container Farm

14 October 2017
Mr David McCarthy
Environmental Science students recently visited a local "farm" where Brentwood parents Julian & Joelle Butcher are growing lettuces inside a repurposed shipping container. Students learned how efficient this growing system is in terms of water use and photosynthetic production. The 40 ft container is capable of growing 50,000 heads of lettuce per year on vertical strips illuminated by red and blue LEDs.  Science question … why these colors?  The nutrient solution which circulates as well as the climate, including carbon dioxide levels, are monitored by sensors and can be remotely controlled.  Many thanks to our Brentwood parents for taking time to show and explain this amazing technology. Lettuce reflect on the value of vegetables. ;-) Mr David McCarthy
