Let The Sun Shine In! 1

The sun is finally shining as our third and final term of sport draws to an end. The month of May has once again been an extraordinarily busy time for our Brentwood athletes and their efforts have resulted in some strong performances. Our Senior Tennis team recently returned from the BC Championship in Vancouver where they played some excellent tennis and finished 4th in the province. In golf action, the team participated in the Island Championship where it finished in eighth place. While it was not Brentwood’s best finish, the team improved nicely throughout the year and, with a young core, the future looks bright. Our Senior Girls Soccer team had a nice finish to its season. Despite dealing with a rash of injuries, the girls battled through an extremely competitive Island tournament to the bronze medal game with a berth at provincials on the line. With the score still tied 0-0 after extra time, the team lost a heartbreaker in penalty kicks but the coaches were nonetheless thrilled with how hard the team competed all tournament long and it was a great result for this group. The Senior Boys Rugby team advanced to the newly formatted provincial championship where only the top 8 teams in the province would be represented at the Tier 1 AA level. After losing a very close game to SMUS at the Island Championship, Brentwood enters the tournament seeded #3. The boys have a difficult draw ahead of them but they are playing excellent rugby and are poised for a strong finish. The Junior Boys Rugby team have had an equally impressive year. They had a terrific win over Oak Bay in the semi-final of the Island Championship and lost a hard fought affair to Shawnigan in the Island final. Nonetheless, the second place finish earned them our first ever berth at the junior rugby provincials which was a terrific accomplishment for this promising group of youngsters. Our Girls Rugby team, despite being young and inexperienced, showed a great deal of progress this year. They finished 8th in the province but with so many players new to the game and many of them in grades nine or ten, the future looks bright for this team. This year, thanks to the assistance of Mrs Day Reynolds, Mr Griffiths and Mr Heistermann, we also had several students compete in Track and Field. These passionate athletes did track in addition to doing their normal Brentwood sport so it meant giving up a great deal of their free time. Six of them earned places at the Provincial Track and Field Championship which is taking place on the mainland; we wish them every success. 46 rowers have departed for the National Championships in St. Catharines where we know they will make the school proud. Congrats to all our student-athletes on a remarkable series of accomplishments this month.
