Junior Tennis 2015-2016

12 August 2016
A large and enthusiastic group of junior tennis players assembled on the courts early this year, keen to compete for the school, and leave their mark on tennis history. These juniors arrived from all over the world with an enthusiastic love of the game. In first term, they practiced hard to improve their skills, working to keep up with the older players. The junior players also competed in the Spring Invitational Doubles Tournament hosted by Brentwood.  Many continued their training indoors throughout the winter months. Along the way, they competed against older teams in the Indoor Invitational Tournament. The juniors were not overwhelmed by the older players, and competed well against many of the top seniors. With the arrival of the warmer weather, more junior players flocked to the tennis courts, eager to prove themselves. A strong team of Brentwood boys and girls defeated Shawnigan in a friendly match as a warm-up for the ISAs. This year, the team travelled to Vancouver for the ISAs, held for the first time at UBC’s indoor tennis centre. Both teams competed strongly, with the girls claiming the bronze medal and boys finishing in fourth. After much practice and game experience, a team of girls and two teams of boys travelled to the BC Junior Tennis Championships hosted by us, yet held at the Burnaby Lakes TC because of the need for 16 courts. The competition was fierce, and the Brentwood teams competed robustly. After two days of competition, the girls’ team narrowly missed a place in the final, but re-grouped for a strong third place finish. The B Boys team finished in ninth place, winning their final three matches. The A Boys teams also competed for the bronze medal, but were forced to settle for fourth. All the players improved steadily with every match. Junior tennis at Brentwood is producing many strong players who will be looking to move up to the senior ranks. We are very pleased with the hard work the juniors have put in this season. Many thanks to Mrs. McLean and Mr. Alscher for their time and support.
