Junior Soccer - ISA Champs Times Two

Saturday, November 17, 2018 - By: Jack NG, Ellis ‘21

The season was a rollercoaster. The boys started out with a convincing win over Kelsey, kicking the year off with a 7-0 goal differential. A week later the short-staffed team faced next door rivals Shawnigan. The lads lost a hard-fought battle against a surprisingly strong & well instructed team. Next up was the 2018 Junior Boys ISA Championships, hosted at the school. Much of the team was returning players from last year, & had been awaiting this tournament since the end of the last campaign. Brentwood had an ‘A’ & a ‘B’ team in the tournament & both teams were able to grab Gold medals in their respective categories. For the ‘A’ team it was the second consecutive year of ISA supremacy.

The team was a perfect mix of old, fundamental wisdom, & new, young talent. The old wise ones were the 10 boys who had played the previous year. The most outstanding young talents were the three Grade 8s who lit up Mill Bay in their first season of high school soccer. Dylan G, Whittall ‘23 was a stud in between the pipes, allowing only single digits in the Brentwood net throughout the whole regular season. Noah H, Whittall ‘23 was the overall leading scorer at the ISA championships, racking up four goals in the same number of games. Davis P, Whittall ‘23 was tied for leading scorer in the Island Championships, scoring the game winners vs. teams from Spectrum & Isfeld.

The season finished off with an unfortunate turn of events, including some questionable officiating, & a penalty shootout loss that left the boys in a position to play for 5th place instead of 3rd. The lads held it together & overcame this adversity to finish with a three goal win over Isfeld, ending the season on a high note.

Thank you to Mr Barrett, Mr Collis, & Mr Mallete for their fantastic coaching, & best of luck to the 6 boys traveling with Senior team to the Provincial Championships in Vancouver.
