Junior Girls Basketball Provincial Tournament
Ten basketball players, two coaches, one Laurel and everyone’s favourite bus driver, Richy, became a family and made unforgettable memories all in just one week in late February! The Junior Girls Basketball team travelled over to Langley on Tuesday, February 24th to make Brentwood’s first appearance EVER at the Provincial Tournament.
Already having made history, the team was pumped for what the tournament would hold for them! And so a chilly Tuesday afternoon saw the girls all suited up in their team tracksuits ready for some strong competition. We faced AAA College Heights for our opening game. The match was close right from tip-off, but sadly in the fourth quarter, the girls started to fall behind. It then became harder for the girls to catch up when Jensa NG, Mack ‘23 and Alex H, Hope ‘22, two team starters, suffered injuries. With the girls struggling to make their free throws in key moments, they endured a tough loss which placed them in the Rivalry Bracket.
After their first game, the team was focused on turning the tournament around and winning their bracket. The troops won their next match comfortably against Duchess Park 54-22 and went on to play their most exciting game of the tournament against the 19th seed of the tournament, Robert Bateman.
With a minute left in the game clock, and Brentwood down by three points, Jensa shot from beyond the arc to tie the game! “The three-pointer gave momentum to our girls,” said Coach Napier to the Cowichan Valley Citizen. Then a hustle play by Ella D, Hope ‘23 got the ball back. Ella helped seal the deal by sinking three of four free throws to put Brentwood in the lead as the final buzzer went. Big congrats to Ella as she achieved a big career-high, finishing the game with 29 points and earning the Player of the Game Award!
After that win, Brentwood would face AAAA Riverside in their bracket final. As it was the last game of their season, the girls left it all on the floor and held nothing back: we defeated Riverside 60-47!
More tournament highlights included the team photo shoot, where the girls enjoyed taking some awesome action shots in front of a green screen and the team banquet, that saw the girls follow Brentwood tradition dressed in their #1 uniforms. Also, there were team meetings at night that showcased our multi-talented players, like some awesome singing by Sophie B, Mack ‘22 and Ella D, Hope ‘23 as well as some interesting interpretive dancing by Jocelyn L, Mack ‘22. “Dancing is just one of my many talents,” stated our 6-foot-1 star post.
None of our success this season would have been possible without our amazing coaching staff of Ms Napier, Ms Bakker and Ms Manton. Thank you also to our favourite bus driver, Richy, and to Laurel for coming on our provincial journey with us and being part of our family. And finally, a special thanks to the grade 10s on our team who will be moving up to senior next year. The best of luck in your basketball journey! Another Junior Girls Basketball season in the books.
It is just the beginning for this young group of girls!
