Junior Boys Soccer

3 January 2024
Mr Paul Collis

Robert Browning once observed, “Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for?”

This year’s Junior Boys Soccer team reached for many things in the soccer heavens, but our grasp was only mortal. We were literally seconds away from a gold medal at the ISA tournament, before a late, late equalizer and then cruel penalty kicks – a vindictive god who would come to define our season – left us silver, and bereft.

We crushed our local league to easily win the Central zone, but Islands in sunny Campbell River proved to be another tale of heartbreak, penalty woes, and pain. Did we almost beat the soccer academy? Yes, we did. Did we beat them? No. But on the bright side, we returned from the season with a full ball bag.

The beautiful game can be a cruel mistress, but we will court her hand again.
