Junior A Girls Volleyball: Bronze at ISA tournament
The ISA Junior Girls Volleyball tournament took place at St. Michaels University School this past weekend, with the Brentwood Junior A and Junior B teams among the 10 teams competing. The defending champions (the Brentwood A team) entered the tournament with determination as they were in a pool with two strong teams –York House and West Point Grey Academy. Our rookie team began strongly, winning their first match against Shawnigan Lake School 25-7 and 25-15. Their next match was against York House and after an easy win in the first game (25-16), the team fought to keep their lead in the second game, but ended up losing 25-27. The next match was against the silver place team from last year, West Point Grey Academy, and Brentwood came out on top, sweeping both games 25-21. The final match in pool play was against Southridge, and again this new Brentwood team displayed amazing depth, focus, and talent. This match ended up in a split win for each team. After pool play, there were three teams in the pool with 6 points. Positions were then determined by points per game which meant that Brentwood placed second with Southridge first. In the semifinal, Brentwood's relatively inexperienced team fought for the entire match but was defeated by Crofton House in both games (23-25). This match could have gone either way, but Brentwood took the defeat with pride and carried their momentum into the bronze medal match with Collingwood. After a slow start, the girls beat Collingwood 25-19 and 25-16 to take the bronze medal. Congratulations go to Emily Hindson for being named as one of the four all-stars at the tournament for her consistent and strong play. Mairi Horth, Meghan Grant and Alia Villanueva also had stand-out performances.
The Junior B team placed fifth in pool play and did not advance after the round-robin matches. Their spirits, however, were high in every game and the did not give up until the last point was played.
