Junior A Girls Basketball

Every aspect of the sports community at Brentwood is an inclusive, enjoyable experience, but I can safely say that the Junior A Girls Basketball team was the most like family I have experienced with a team so far. Our group was consistent in dedication, spirit, and positive attitude throughout the season. Despite being composed almost entirely of Grade 8s and 9s, we played hard every game to win the Mid-Island League. We then advanced to a generally successful Island Championship. This is the first group of Junior Girls who had advanced this far in many years. We had bumps along the way, including Gracie D playing on a broken shoulder half the season, to the 8s (Ella D, Ella S, Jensa NG & Miranda N) sprinting from class to get to practice on time, some tough losses, and difficult game situations. Nevertheless, these were all countered with the 8’s astounding skills, and our motivation to make every game count. Special shoutout to Miranda, who won the Lister Trophy for not only her skill and attitude, but outstanding leadership on and off the court.  As previously mentioned, our team is like family. I can say with confidence that any member would have every girl’s back. It was a safe environment, one in which I felt comfortable expressing my insecurities about basketball, and was able to rely on my team to help me improve. I am now sure enough of myself to take shots from even the right side of the basket, all thanks to my teammates who helped me build that confidence. As the lone Grade 10 on the team, I am proud and honoured to have had the possibility to learn so much from such skilled, kind, positive, amazing young athletes.  Finally, of course, this season would not have been possible without the hard work and hours of work our wonderful coaches, Mrs. Napier and Ms Baker, put in to our development and success. Many thanks. Chloe C, Allard ‘21
