Every year, amidst the darkness of a chilly February night, Crooks Hall is brought alive with the music, talent, and laughter at Java Hut, and this year was no exception. Java Hut, Brentwood’s annual talent show, offers everybody who wishes to perform a chance to utilize their various talents to entertain Brentwood’s population for a much-enjoyed evening.

After Saturday packed with classes, sports, and snowball fights (a relished activity following the first snowfall of the season) students and staff gathered in Crooks, with blankets, friends, and warm drinks to complete the evening. The kitchen ensured that there was hot chocolate and chips for everyone to enjoy throughout the night, and at 7:45, the audience’s attention was drawn to the spotlighted stage for the first performance.

Widely ranging acts showcased many diverse and impressive talents, all of which were greatly enjoyed by the audience. Solo, duet, and group singing, including performances of jazz, pop, rock and rap, filled a large portion of the night, even featuring a student-composed song! A broad variety of instrumental talent was also showcased, with performances on guitar, mandolin, piano, drums, ukulele, saxophone, and various other musical instruments! Other acts included stand up comedy, and a comedic skit put on by some staff members, both of which had the audience roaring with laughter.

“It takes so much confidence [from the performers] just to get up there”, admired Anastasia L, Hope ‘19, and I can definitely echo that sentiment. I would like to extend a huge thank you to all the talented and engaging performers, as well as the Student Activity Council, particularly Georgia G, Asia C, and Mrs McLean, for their hard work organizing this amazing event!
