January Athletics Review

3 February 2019
Blake Gage, Director of Athletics
January has been a busy time for our competitive sports teams. The hockey program has had an eventful month.  They have impressed in league play going 2-2-1. They also hosted their annual Showcase game with St George’s in front of a boisterous Brentwood crowd. The team played hard but ultimately fell short and St George’s took home the victory and with it the Saville Cup. Nonetheless, the team battled right to the end and acquitted themselves admirably. The school was immensely proud of them. The Senior Girls Basketball team tipped off the month with an away trip to the Archbishop Carney Tournament in Vancouver where the girls played well against some excellent competition. They also hosted the first ever basketball tournament in the Foote Athletic Centre and we received great feedback about the event. They also hosted Shawnigan in their annual Showcase event before heading into South Island and hopefully Island playoffs in February. The Junior Girls Basketball team also had a fine start to the year. They began with a trip to Vancouver to play in a Provincial Qualifying tournament, and then fared well at the Junior ISA tournament at York House the next weekend with two wins and a loss to the silver medallist. For the first time ever, Brentwood fielded two teams for ISAs this year, so we also had representation at the tier two tournament in Victoria that same weekend. Despite being a very young squad these young women have gone undefeated in league play, winning the Mid-Island Championship game against Shawnigan and now they head to Islands. On the boys side, the Junior A team is off to a sizzling start with their only loss to date coming to SMUS in the final of the ISA tournament. This past weekend the boys hosted their own tournament where they played excellent basketball and won Gold with a hard fought victory over Lambrick Park in the final. The boys have also secured first place in Mid-Island league play and are gearing up for the Island Championship in February. Our Junior B boys have also been rocking in January. Coach Warner has an army of players that are improving at an astonishing rate. The boys showed well competing against many ‘A’ teams at the ISA Tier II tournament and they have managed to claim first in their Mid-Island league and head into playoffs next week at Duncan Christian School. The Senior Boys team have had to shake some rust off coming out of the holidays but are starting to round into form. They are coming off a nice win in their Showcase game against Shawnigan Lake and opened their annual Countdown to Playoffs Tournament with a win over Reynolds. The boys have secured first place in the Mid-Island league and will start their playoff run in February. Our squash team has also been busy playing in a number of Victoria based men’s tournaments and they showed well at the ISA tournament hosted at Shawnigan this past weekend. Action only gets hotter in February as we get into basketball playoffs and the hockey team hosts our annual Ross Cup tournament – we will keep you posted on all the results!
