Islands Soccer

13 November 2013
John Garvey & Gord Horth
The Senior Boys Soccer team travelled to the University of Victoria to finish their season with a spirited run against the best the Island has to offer. With the BCS break falling at the same time, the team had to rely on Island-based athletes to make up the squad on the first day of the tournament. A number of players with limited First XI experience were able to play top sides and were to showcase that they were more than capable of playing at that level. Special kudos to Henri & Jaco VR, and Colin W are warranted, as well as to Ole B who was not part of the soccer squad but offered his athletic talents and determination to assist the team who were short manned. With no trained goaltender available the first day, Colin W and Martin K took a game apiece between the pipes with both seeing considerable action and both giving a good account of themselves while Josh S scored in our game against Mark Isfeld. While falling short of qualifying for the provincial tournament, the coaches were buoyed by the strong performances all season and the gritty commitment shown in a number of key playoff games. There was a mental toughness on display and excellent team spirit which bodes well for the 2014 squad. Mr. John Garvey & Mr. Gord Horth, Coaches
