Back to Back to Back to Back? The Seniors Boys Basketball team hosted the Island Championship this past weekend in hopes of defending their Island title.

Our Sr Boys Basketball program has been a force to be reckoned with in the past four years. The legacy started when powerhouse duo Bruno C, Whittall ‘18 and Brendon S, Ellis ‘18, led the senior boys to consecutive wins four years ago. Ian G, Rogers ‘19, then carried on the legacy as Captain last year helping his team defend their Island Championship for the third year in a row. This year the troops were led by Captain (and my older brother) Juan NP, Whittall ‘20. With a great team effort, they managed to bring their Island title home for the fourth consecutive year.

After capturing the North Island title last weekend, the team kicked off the tournament with a huge win over Highlands. This game allowed the whole team to play and set an excellent path for the rest of the tournament. In the semis, the boys handily defeated our neighbours from Shawnigan.

Heading into the finals, the boys knew it was not going to be an easy game as beating the #3 ranked team in the BC, Lambrick Park, is no easy task! A short-handed Lambrick had beaten us by a point earlier in the season. “We went into the game with nothing but excitement to defend our title,” said Juan NP. As the game went on, our boys fell behind Lambrick going into half down by 12 points.

In the second half, the boys started to show their grit and determination and with the help of a couple of juniors, Ben B, Whittall ‘22 and Dylan G, Whittall ‘23, the team was able to bring it down to a five-point difference going into the fourth quarter. The game came down to the very last seconds when Dylan G tied it up. Some remarkable defence by Jack NG, Ellis ‘21 helped get the ball back and with 9 seconds left on the clock, it took a hard cross-over into a mid-range pull up by freshman Dylan G to score the game-winning basket! 75-73.

“It is great to see how much our team has improved since Mid-Islands. It is even better to keep our momentum going into provincials,” said recipient of the Best Defensive Player Award, Jack NG, Ellis ‘21. Tournament awards also included Second Team All-Star Justin W, Whittall ‘20; First Team All-Star Shaw B, Ellis ‘21; Player of the Game Dylan G, and Island Championships MVP, Juan NP.

Congrats to all the boys for a fantastic tournament. Best of luck at Provincials!
