"I've always believed that if you work hard, the results will come." - Michael Jordan On a rainy weekend in Vancouver, the Brentwood Junior Girls basketball team proved Michael Jordan right; they worked very hard, and received fantastic results. The weekend ended in a third place finish at the Independent Schools' Association Championships. Coach Laura Mullins travelled to the tournament with 9 players, unsure of the road ahead of them. The girls started their tournament off strongly with a win over Southridge, a provincially ranked team. Zjaya D was awarded player of the game, despite playing the entire game with shin splints. The girls played a second game an hour later, against the host school, York House. The score was close throughout the entire game, and the players performed very well, but sadly, our team could not pull off the win. Zara P played strongly, and won player of the game. Although the team lost to York House, their win over Southridge was enough to send them into the semifinals against SMUS.  Once again, the team ran hard, and played very well. Unfortunately, in the first half, the girls just couldn't get shots to drop. However, the second half went much better for the team, and the comeback was on. Alex T had a fantastic game, and was also gifted a player-of-the-game shirt. The game was tight, but sadly, our girls were not able to get enough points on the board. SMUS advanced to the finals, where they later claimed gold medals, and Brentwood went on to the Bronze Medal Game, against our rivals, Shawnigan Lake School. Determined to come home with medals around their necks, Brentwood came out fighting strong, and soon had a 10-2 lead over Shawnigan. Although players were injured, they continued to play hard, and refused to let their injuries slow them down. The game was tight, but Brentwood pulled away in the fourth quarter, giving us the win!  Zjaya D was once again awarded player of the game, and the team came home with a third place finish. Coincidentally, the Brentwood Junior Girls' basketball team had played in a tournament two weeks before, where they had also defeated Shawnigan in the Bronze Medal Game. Ms Mullins is extremely proud of how hard the girls worked, and how well they played as a team. Brentwood is currently sitting in first place of the Mid-Island League heading into playoffs, and hope to make it to the Island Championships.
