Intersquad Intensity

10 November 2017
Our last practice before midterm was one full of bright smiles, quick moves, and a fun atmosphere. Every player chomped at the bit to get on the ice to face a friendly foe: an inter-squad game had been organized by the coaching staff, which came with some heavy wagering, talks of double-doubles, and donuts thrown back and forth between the benches.  The Red team, coached by Mr Shadlock, was full of speed and power with the likes of Kurtis H, Privett ‘19 & Luke W, Whittall ‘18 leading the offense with their explosive scoring ability, while the White team had intimidating defensive prowess with Mason S, Privett ‘18 leading the way and elite scorers such as Lanny L, Ellis ‘18 & Lauchlan M, Privett ‘18 loaded up at the front.  A heated battle between teammates, the game was back and forth for three hard periods. The whistles provided breaks for only a momentary breather and a quick drink of water. The score ran up quickly, with both sides on the offensive and moving at full pace.  The final tally reached an unsatisfying verdict of a 7-7 tie, but this game is a much bigger deal to us than any other so far this year. Deklon S, Privett ‘20 played his first game back since suffering a spinal cord injury in December. He wore a yellow cautionary pinny across his chest as a reminder that he was playing his first game in nearly a year. Centering the top line of the White team, he played as if he hadn’t missed a beat. With a wide smile painted across his face, he notched several assists in helping his team to the tie. It was an uplifting moment for the entire hockey programme, and a monumental step on Deklon’s road to recovery!
