Whatever could you do to keep 500 students busy on campus on a Saturday evening in late November, when it's too cold and dark to go outside?

Well you pair them up and give each duo three bean bags and a wooden board with a hole in the middle. That’s what you do.

A total of 105 partnerships entered the contest, from across all four cohorts. The tournament was set up so that the eight best teams from each learning group would move on to compete for a place in the Interhouse Cornhole Tournament coming in the new year.

In the Ellis/Mack quarter of the tournament, fan favourites Oscar L, Ellis ‘23 and Jensa NG, Mack ‘23 made quite the unexpected underdog run. “People were coming from everywhere to watch us! Most of them seemed to be Grade 12 ladies” Oscar recalled pensively. Unfortunately this Cinderella story was cut short by the powerhouse pair of Julian W, Mack ‘22, and Lilli S, Mack ‘23, who have qualified for the intehouse stage of the competition.

In the orange and teal quadrant of the gym, things were getting a little wild for Rogers/Allard. “It was chaotic in a good way” remarked Yehya J, Rogers ‘22. “It was certainly an exciting time.” A team to look out for in the next round are varsity crewmates Sarah G, and Shae L, Allard ‘21. What they lack in hand-eye coordination, they certainly make up for with power from the legs, and in the words of Mr Sullivan: “Shooting is all in the legs” - words I have lived by since my first days of Junior Boys Basketball in Grade 8.

The Alex/Whittall crew wrapped up their tournament the quickest of all the groups. One of the interhouse-qualifying teams was made up of House Captain Alice S, and Ceci D, Alex ‘21. When I asked Alice for her take on their performance, she replied: “We lost our first game, and then won our second because Sajeev was in Saturday night prep so his team had to forfeit. We owe it all to Sajeev, really.” I have no doubt that these girls will put on an exquisite showing in the Interhouse portion of this competition. It was meant to be. Beanbag don’t lie, ladies. Beanbag don’t lie.

Hope/Privett was making quite the ruckus in their corner of the gym. While the Tommy M/Jacob H team is the one in the headlines, there has been quite a bit of hustle put in by the Emilee N/Maddy W, Hope ’21 duo. After suffering a crushing defeat in the first round, they rebounded to make a comeback and finish at the top of the consolation bracket, qualifying them for the Interhouse phase. Jacob & Tommy were unbelievable in their dominance. No one stood a chance against Tommy with a bag in his hand, and it became apparent that Cornhole is another sport on the long list of games that people from Salt Spring Island are freakishly good at. Well played Jacob.

Thank you to Ms McLean and her team for putting together such an exciting event. Best of luck to everyone in their off-season training. We can’t wait to see you back for episode two in January.
